REALISM TO ABSTRACT SUPPLY LIST

No sewing machine required (unless you are a fast worker and feel you may get to quilting in the time allowed, then bring batting and backing).

In this class using your own photograph as a starting point you will be guided through a series of design exercises to create an original abstract composition. You will be shown how to translate your design into a pattern and from there create an original fiber composition. A variety of fusing and painting techniques will be incorporated in the construction.

The subject matter in your photograph is up to you. Bring a variety or shots from which to choose. In shooting your photos make sure that the light source is from one direction only: it should be a single light source that creates strong contrast between the highlights and shadows falling across the subject matter. We will experiment with various fusing techniques when assembling the piece. Time allowing you will enhance the depth, add detail and accentuate your image with textile paints. The photograph should be a color 8 x 10. Please make two 8 x10 black and white copies as well. I don't recommend landscapes or "too much going on" in the image, often simple is better.

Fabrics:

Background: one yard of pre-washed black cotton fabric.

Other fabrics: Cottons that have multi-value/multi-color in one piece such as hand dyes, the commercial hand dyes, Batiks*, fabrics with visual texture and value change. Specialty fabrics such as: velvets, organzas, tulles, lace, add texture and interest. Please make sure there are some intense dark and very light values in your selection, and bring a large selection, a suitcase on wheels is a great invention (if possible)!

Supplies to bring:

Rotary cutter**, xacto knife**, cutting mat, flower head pins*, iron and board,*** ballpoint pen, black sharpie marker, scotch magic tape, painters tape, extension cord, roll of Reynold parchment paper, roll of Reynolds Freezer paper. Please feel free to bring your I pod with your favorite working music, I'll have a speakers. Bring your work if you would like to share with the class.

* many at Grinnell FiberWorks

**available for sale at Grinnell FiberWorks

***4 ironing stations at Grinnell FiberWorks - you can leave your iron at home.

Class fee is $20.: Misty-fuse (black and white)**, "Transdoodle**" transfer paper, textile paints**, use of brushes, paint supplies
